The cheapest Warcry Ability Dice Tray!

Sometimes you want to make something because you need it, like our Vertical Compact Paint Rack.
Sometimes you want to make it because you’re not fully happy with other solutions on the market.
Let’s be honest, this project was a bit of both.
Looking around
When looking online, we can see a bunch of products for Warcry that are designed for compactness like this one from Lazy3dPrints.
It was a great idea. The 16mm option would definitely fit what I want. But the price was definitely a bit steep in my opinion. In terms of design, I do think it's simple, but it's a bit too straightforward for my taste.
Then I was looking at this one from WartilesPL
I did really like the overall look of the product, but the price was a bit steep. This is just a dice tray, it’s not a miniature. Also you have plenty of dead space on the right side that could have been used way better.
I looked at plenty of other options on the market, however I could notice 2 clear trends:
- Most products are too expensive
- Most products are not suited for the “original” warcry dice
Design Philosophy
- Let’s summarise the design element for this Warcry Ability Dice Tray:
- I want something compact and easy to transport
- My warcry dice need to fit in it
- I want to make sure the dice don’t go everywhere when I play
- The style should be minimalistic with all space being used to its fullest
Then I just took a piece of paper and drew some sketches about it (No I won’t show them, because I draw horribly). Obviously, the classic rectangle shape was the best one I could think of.
After measuring the dice, I made the proper section for everything (Single, Double, Triple, Quad, Wild Dice, Turn and Victory Points).
A warcry dice is 16mm. I wanted 2mm between each section and 1mm of leeway within the section.
I hear you saying “Oh no, too much math”. Well guess what, I’m lazy. Thanks to the parametric modelling of Solidworks, I didn’t need to do math and could just input the requirement above and see the overall shape changing accordingly. If you want a quick intro to Solidworks, check out this video I followed to get an idea on how it works [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ulttc_2p4DY&list=PLrOFa8sDv6jcp8E3ayUFZ4iNI8uuPjXHe ].
Result
The project wasn’t complex in the first place. It didn’t need to be! Sometimes the best things are the simplest ones.
